Explore the Outdoors at YMCA Camp Shand This Summer

By Sponsored Advertising Content February 10, 2016
Yes, it snowed this week, but summer will be here before we know it, and NOW is the time to start planning for amazing summer camp experiences!

YMCA Camp Shand, located in Cornwall Pa., offers day and sleep over camping programs for children ages 6-16. Part of the Lancaster YMCA, Camp Shand encourages kids to unplug, step out of everyday life and have a great time while also learning new skills, exploring nature, making new friends, working in a team and gaining self-confidence.

At Camp Shand, campers will enjoy hiking, swimming, kayaking, archery and more. Camp counselors will focus on the core values of the YMCA: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

Read on for a short preview of each of the opportunities available at YMCA Camp Shand this summer. You can view dates and themes, and register on their website at http://lancasterymca.org/camp/. If you have questions, you can call them at 717-272-8001.

DAY CAMPS

Adventure Day Camp (Ages 6-12)

Campers are divided into groups by age, so activities are age appropriate. Typical camp experiences include pool and lake-front activities, outdoor living skills, arts & crafts, nature activities, sports and games, music and drama, and more! Each week has a different theme, so campers can attend all summer long and never be bored! Daily lunch included.

Teen Adventure Day Camp (Ages 13-15)

At Teen Adventure, teens hang out with others their age, in their own unique village and program. Teens will work as a team in small groups and even help plan trips and activities. An on-site overnight at camp each week will give them a chance to plan a menu and prepare meals. Daily lunch included.

RESIDENT CAMPS

Resident Camp (Six days/five nights, campers ages 7-12)

Campers will love this five-night program, filled with fun and lots of new experiences. Throughout the week, campers will build relationships with their cabin mates and counselors. Camp Shand prides itself on cabins with a maximum of nine campers and at least one counselor.

Campers will have the opportunity to choose activities such as pool and lakefront activities (canoeing, tubing, and kayaking), critter hikes and nature activities on the camp’s 120 acres, arts & crafts, archery, music and drama, our 24-foot climbing wall, 40-foot high ropes course and much more! Each week concludes with a family campfire for everyone to come and see all the fun that has occurred during a wonderful week at Camp Shand.

Here’s a great way to spend a little extra time at camp, with a small group of campers. Over the weekend, campers will get to wash their laundry, enjoy camp all to themselves, and take a special field trip on Saturday. To sign up for a stay over weekend, campers must be registered for the week before and/or the week after that weekend. Stay over campers also receive a free T-Shirt!

This is the perfect program for campers who are ready for their first “sleep away” camp experience. Children will have opportunities for all of the traditional Camp Shand activities and fun, packed into a shorter program. First-timer campers will get to enjoy a close bond with Camp Shand’s top-notch staff, as this program incorporates a greater staff to camper ratio.

Come to camp for two weeks instead of one, plus a great stay over weekend in between! On Friday of the first week, parents and families are invited to come to camp for dinner and a visit from 5-8 p.m. Over the weekend, campers will get to wash their laundry, enjoy camp all to themselves, and take a special field trip on Saturday. This program has a special rate, so campers are getting more from the camp experience, and you pay less!

TEEN CAMPS

This program is for campers who will be entering their Junior or Senior year in the fall of 2016 and who are ready to begin the transition from camper to staff. For two weeks, CIT’s will get the opportunity to work with children and develop leadership skills. They will spend time on Camp Shand’s challenge course and learn to lead songs and a variety of camp activities. CIT’s will have the chance to participate in both Day and Resident programs. During the second week, CIT’s will be placed with cabins to assist counselors and gain some valuable firsthand experience.

Take resident camp to the extreme! Spend days (and nights!) exploring the outlying areas of Camp Shand.

At Service Camp, teens have a great time learning new skills while helping others. Days will be spent working on projects at camp and at other non-profit organizations in the Lebanon and Lancaster areas. Nights will be spent enjoying regular camp activities.
