Tips for Safe Driving in Winter Weather

By Sponsored Advertising Content February 5, 2020

Lebanon County is right in the middle of winter! While it has been mild so far, there is plenty of time for old man winter to make his appearance. Driving in inclement weather is not only stressful but can be very dangerous. The best way to stay safe is to stay off the roads but we all know that with work and family obligations that is not always a possibility.

If you must venture out, prior to leaving make sure you listen to weather updates and any travel advisories; the last thing you want to do is have to turn around because of a road closure you were not aware of.

Keep your cell phone with you and fully charged.

Make sure your gas tank is above half full.

Tell a trusted family member or friend where you are going and your expected arrival time. This way, if you become stranded, they can tell emergency personnel what roads you were planning to travel.

Before moving your car, clean your vehicle entirely from any snow or ice.

Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to arrive at your destination.

Slow down and increase your travel distance between yourself and the vehicle in front of you.

Try to avoid any sudden stops or starts and keep your low beams on. Never use cruise control.

Stay alert while driving! Be aware of other cars, trucks, plow trucks and pedestrians.

Use extra caution on bridges, ramps, and underpasses where the road tends to freeze faster. When the road looks wet, keep in mind that there is a possibility it is black ice.

If you happen to become stranded, it is best to stay with your vehicle and wait until help arrives. Run the engine about every hour for a few minutes to keep warm and periodically check your tailpipe to make sure it is clear!

Keep an emergency kit in the vehicle that contains items like blankets, road flares, bottled water, first-aid kit, jumper cables, a small shovel, and a flashlight.

Lastly, the most important part is to ALWAYS wear your seatbelt! Safe travels!
