Whirling Dervish Bakery Reflects on 2020, Plans for 2021

By Becky Gacono, Whirling Dervish January 18, 2021

2020 - A year we will never forget. A year like none of us could have imagined. It can be overwhelming but it can also be a reminder to look for the good. So as 2020 came to an end, we wanted to take the time to remember that although our lives are different and unlike the way they used to be there is still so much we are thankful for.

First and foremost, we have the BEST CUSTOMERS EVER and we are so thankful and grateful for every one of you who comes through our door or pulls up to pick up your curbside order. You have given us the push we needed to keep going during 2020.

AND, our Bakery wouldn't continue to open without my amazing team that helps me at the bakery and makes it so much fun to work hard. They are the best!

As we started to think about the things we love at the bakery and the things we love doing in the community, we realized there were a lot of good things in 2020.

  • Throughout this year we continued to celebrate customers' birthdays.
  • We donated our baked goods to the USO, the VA hospice floor, the Rescue Mission, and giveaways to our customers.

  • We did two Cookies & Coffee Fundraisers to raise money for A-C School District families, raising $2,300 in 3 days for the first one and $1,465 in two days for the second one.
  • April 1, we celebrated our 3-year anniversary at the Bakery - a party made up of ME, my gnome friends, and lots of balloons.
  • We made our outside book box a food pantry. People continue to drop cans off for Ralph which he still picks up.
  • We surprised two little girls with an adoption party this summer for two of our Bakery Gnomes because they had fallen in love with them.

  • We have the best FedEx delivery guy ever - always upbeat and happy.
  • We delivered baked goods to students at LVC and sang to them on their birthdays.
  • Our chocolate-covered peanut butter balls are being sold at more local businesses and even headed to a coffee shop in The Hague, in the Netherlands to be shared.
  • We made twenty 9X13 pans of cakes and handed slices out to families at the A-C School to celebrate the end of summer.
  • In December, we handed out gift cards and chocolate chip cookies at the A-C School.
  • Rotunda Brewing Co. asked us to do a joint beer with them - their beer and our baked goods combined to make some amazing beer. We are very excited about this partnership!
  • Last, but not least, Santa stopped by the bakery for a visit in December - a perfect way to bring 2020 to an end.

As crazy and hard as 2020 has been, we realize we have had so much good going on in our little world at the bakery because of you! Thank you for giving us some good memories to mix into this year no one will ever forget.

We look forward to 2021, whatever it may bring. We will continue to look for the love and goodness around us and do our best to create and contribute to it in our little happy place.
