Hatching and Raising Geese !

Down on the Farm

Geese can be a wonderful addition to the farm or even a backyard homestead like mine.  They are beautiful to look at and lay giant eggs.  They are a wonderful addition to chickens, ducks, and turkeys.  They can all get along and the geese are good protectors of the smaller birds because they will alert by honking when they see predators nearby.

They are a little harder to hatch than chickens and ducks, and they take higher humidity and a longer time in the incubator.  They take 28-32 days to hatch.  But once they hatch they are the most adorable creatures around.  They will definitely imprint on you if you spend time with them.  They will follow you like a puppy and jump right into your lap!  They LOVE to talk to you, especially when they are little.  They grow quickly and can be put outside fairly quickly due to that fact.

There are several different types and colors of geese, some are white, grey, buff, and other colors as well.  This particular type that I have is Sebastopol.  They have long curly feathers.  Most other types have short straight feathers.

Geese are mostly vegetarians, which means they love mainly grasses, lettuce, and such.  They do eat grains and corn as well, and sometimes berries too, but they especially love greens!

So if you are looking for something different to add to your homestead, try geese!  They do well with children, and they are just a joy to have around !
