Tips for Driving Safely Around the School Bus

By Sponsored Advertising August 25, 2021

School is right around the corner! That means there will be lots of school buses and school children to watch out for!

If you are someone who commutes to work, give yourself extra driving time if you plan on being on the road during normal pick-up and drop-off times. Motorists MUST STOP for a school bus! If you see a bus with yellow flashing lights, you must slow down and prepare to stop. Red flashing lights mean STOP! You may proceed once the red lights have stopped flashing, the stop arm is withdrawn, and all children have reached their destination safely.

Keep alert, slow down in school zones, and always look out for other pedestrians. If you violate Pennsylvania’s School Bus stopping law, you will not only have a fine to pay but will also have a 60-day license suspension and points on your driving record.

Make sure you arrive at the bus stop a few minutes early so you do not need to rush to catch the bus. While the children are waiting for the bus, make sure they are away from the curb and away from the street. If you must cross the street to get on or off the bus, be aware and cross with care. Wait until the bus and traffic have stopped before stepping onto the road. Make sure to walk at least 10 feet in front of the bus when crossing so the bus driver can easily see you.

If your child walks to school, make sure they use the sidewalks wherever possible and use marked crosswalks to cross the streets. Always check for vehicles before crossing.

Remind your children of the rules while riding the bus. When the bus is moving, they must stay in their seats and sit facing forward. They should talk quietly to not distract the bus driver. Never play with the emergency exits and make sure all bookbags, music instruments, and sports equipment do not block the aisle or emergency exits. And, if there is ever an emergency, make sure to listen to the instructions from the bus driver.

We all play a part in keeping our children, pedestrians, bus drivers, and commuters safe! Stay alert, cross with care, and ALWAYS STOP FOR SCHOOL BUSES!

Here at Friedrich Insurance we wish all students, families, bus drivers, and school staff a very happy and safe school year.
